After more than forty years in practice, Mike Welty can still recall the preordained feeling that he should practice law. His curiosity surrounding people and life fed the desire to be a successful lawyer, an unceasing attribute to this day.
Integrating life — personal, business, legal — into an interrelated whole, Mike protects clients’ interests and preserves wealth without the necessity of complex legal procedures. He says he started out a lawyer, but grew to understand the profession’s other name: counselor. That realization helped him bring humanity to his practice of law.
Recently, Mike has transitioned from partner at Welty Welty to being of counsel. He continues to play competitive tennis, is a “grey on a tray” when he snowboards and is an extreme skier, whether on purpose or not. Mike has three kids, including his practice partner Matt, and six grandchildren (with two sets of twins!). He’s seen Healdsburg develop from a sleepy town with a few wineries into the center of wine and food culture it has become. And, he thinks of wine like fresh fruit—if it’s ripe, he loves it.
